*BIGGEST EVER* Fight for $15 National Day of Action

Never have so many working people in this country come out to the streets to call for fair wages and the right to form a union—and SEIU Local 99 members were a BIG part of this historic day! We won’t forget November 10, 2015—exactly one year from Election Day 2016!

PICTURES FROM THE DAY…

Fight for $15 - National Day of Action

We made a splash with our “Stroller Brigade” that highlighted how child care providers and other early educators have joined the national “Fight for $15” movement. Family child care providers who operate day cares out of their own homes earn as little as $4.98 an hour after their expenses, such as kids’ meals and assistants’ wages. So we filled 100 strollers with kids, balloons and picket signs, made toddler puppets calling for $15 an hour for child care providers and chanted “We need a change…and we don’t mean diapers!”

San Pedro Child Care Provider Keenan Davis speaks to reporters about why he joined the Day of Action. Watch him on ABC and CBS.

“We brought our strollers to the streets today because child care shouldn’t cost as much as college tuition. We brought our strollers to the streets today because 90% of child care providers can’t afford even just the basic necessities,” said Child Care Provider Keenan Davis, an SEIU Local 99 member in San Pedro.

Here’s what’s next…

The Fight for $15 movement wants 2016 presidential candidates to know that they need to come get our vote! [find petition] Too many families—even those with good jobs—are struggling to make ends meet. And often good benefits are under constant threat. Tell candidates: “Come get my vote!”

Here in California, we will work to get a statewide $15 minimum wage initiative on the 2016 ballot that will also include six sick days for every full-time worker. Sign up to help collect signatures! Let’s make sure this initiative is on our ballots next year.

It’s time for corporate CEOs to quit rigging the system to avoid paying their fair share for our schools, early education centers and colleges. The people we elect must stop letting the wealthy and powerful write the rules in their favor. Together, we can work to end racism and oppression, create a path to citizenship for immigrants, and fight for wages that strengthen our communities.

Remember: when we fight, we win!
