When school district consider how to implement new funds, they must remember: We successfully fought to bring more money to our schools and we create the schools our communities deserve! Then Governor Brown developed the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), a plan to make sure most of that money goes to the districts that need it most. The LCFF is intended to bring our schools millions of additional dollars every year through 2020. As it stands, though, there are very flexible guidelines for the way schools can use the extra money. The State Board of Education set goals for the LCFF funds: better conditions of learning, improved student outcomes, and increased school engagement. One look at these goals and it’s clear that districts can’t achieve them without us. As school districts consider how to spend the new funds, we have the opportunity to ensure that they set high—and measurable—baseline quality standards so that every school has the necessary staffing and resources to provide all of the basic student services and supports essential to learning. Let’s continue to speak out when School Boards make decisions about how to spend new LCFF money.
