We made politics work for working families in LAUSD & LACCD Board Elections!

SEIU Local 99 is proud of our unprecedented effort on behalf of LAUSD School Board and LACCD Board of Trustee candidates who share our values. Thanks to our work reaching out to voters, all of our endorsed candidates were successful in yesterday’s election. These are leaders who truly believe that good jobs and good schools go hand-in-hand. We look forward to working with them.

In LAUSD, incumbents Monica Garcia (District 2) and Steve Zimmer (District 4) will return to the Board for another term. Antonio Sanchez (District 6) was the top vote-getter in his District and will head for a run-off election on May 21.

In the LACCD race, Mike Eng secured a victory and David Vela goes into the run-off election as the top candidate.

Working with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, SEIU Local 99 members led the largest independent person-to-person persuasion and mobilization effort in LAUSD history.  Highlights of this campaign include:

• Launched a 9-week phone & door-knocking program in English, Spanish, and Korean (District 2)

• Knocked on more than 100,000 doors and made hundreds of thousands of phone calls

• Identified more than 40,000 voters who supported our endorsed candidates

• Organized a strategic mail & field campaign targeted to Asian-Pacific Islander voters in District 2, including Korean-English mail, phones, and canvassers

• Sent over 120,000 pieces of targeted direct mail

• Deployed more GOTV workers than any other campaign or organization involved in the school board races

We are happy that Monica Garcia will return to the LAUSD Board and continue her efforts to ensure all children have access to a high quality education. She has a true understanding of the role that good jobs play in securing the stability our children need to learn. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with her.

We are glad that Steve Zimmer has won a second term on the LAUSD Board. We value his respect for the contributions of classified employees in our schools. As a classroom teacher, he has a unique perspective on the essential role that school nutrition, transportation, and campus safety and cleanliness play in a child’s education.

And we are thrilled that Mike Eng will join the LACCD Board of Trustees. He brings great experience and we know that as a Community College Trustee, Mike will work to reverse years of cuts to restore great community colleges for our children.

We re-commit to continue strong voter outreach activities in support of Antonio Sanchez (LAUSD District 6) and David Vela (LACCD) in the run-off election.  We believe they will both be strong advocates for educational improvements that are rooted in the needs of our communities.
