Los Angeles—Los Angeles Unified School District custodians, cafeteria workers, instructional assistants, bus drivers, and other members of SEIU Local 99 have endorsed Luis Sánchez for the District 5 seat on the LAUSD School Board.

Mr. Sánchez is a co-founder of and has served as the Executive Director of InnerCity Struggle, a community-based organization that advocates for better schools and higher student achievement in East Los Angeles. Currently, Mr. Sánchez is chief of staff for LAUSD School Board President Monica Garcia

“Mr. Sánchez has been instrumental in making sure all District employees have a strong voice, whether we teach in the classroom or we keep the campus safe and clean,” said Eddie Reed, a heavy bus driver for the District and President of SEIU Local 99. “He also understands that many of us are also LAUSD parents who are concerned about school quality.”

“As a cafeteria worker, I appreciate the leadership Mr. Sánchez showed when we were fighting for health benefits,” said Gamaliel Andrade, who works at Murchison Elementary School. “He understands how essential good health benefits are for those of us who prepare and serve food to thousands of students every day.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the great men and women of SEIU Local 99,” said Mr. Sánchez.  “They serve as the backbone of LAUSD by supporting our students’ success and ensuring our schools remain safe and clean. As both employees and parents, I plan to work in partnership with SEIU members to ensure this district provides quality jobs and great schools.”

In addition to Sánchez, two previously endorsed incumbents—Marguerite LaMotte and Richard Vladovic—retain their SEIU Local 99 endorsements.

SEIU Local 99 is a union of more than 43,000 dedicated education workers who guide our children from preschool and kindergarten, through grade school, high school, and at community colleges. We are teachers, paraeducators, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, first responders, and others working in schools, colleges, and administrative offices throughout Southern California. We are part of SEIU International, the fastest-growing union in North America with 2.1 million members.
