In our recent contract SEIU Local 99 members won the right to establish a committees that will work directly with the District to expand training and job advancement opportunities. Here are the latest updates on the work of this committee:
UPDATE:
During the last meeting of this committee, the District notified us that expansion of the career ladder program and the multi-year plan that the LAUSD School Board directed the Superintendent to develop late last year would not be part of the 2015-2016 District budget. We plan to press the District through lobbying of Board members and through this committee to reconsider this important program. At our next meeting, scheduled for June 30, 2015, we also plan on expanding our discussions to identify obstacles to promotion and career advancement that have been experienced by Building & Grounds and Food Service workers in our union.

UPDATE: October 29, 2014
Our Team presented the District with our proposal for a new and upgraded career advancement program based on the needs members identified during our contract Listening Sessions. Our proposal included:
-
A Career Advancement Fair to ensure all members are informed about the opportunities available in the District
-
A summer bridge training program for bargaining unit members that strengthens employee skills in their job class and creates an in-house pool of highly qualified candidates for higher class positions within LAUSD.
-
Expansion of the Existing Career Ladder program so that it is open and available to all members wishing to promote to jobs within the District
The District was open and receptive to our proposal. They agreed to meet as often as necessary to get the program off the ground. We have tentative meeting dates scheduled for the next two months.
