The State Assembly approved Senate amendments to Assembly Bill 917 on August 30. This bill to give school workers a voice in the charter school petition process is now on Governor Jerry Brown’s desk.
Under existing law, only parents and teachers can sign a petition to establish a charter school or convert a traditional school to a charter. AB917, written by Assembly Member Steven Bradford, would require that at least 50% of all employees at a school sign a petition. This bill will finally give us a voice in a decision that impacts our futures and the children we work with every day.

We’ve come this far thanks to our hard work. We signed postcards, made phone calls, and many Local 99 members took the Midnight Ride to Sacramento to share their stories with legislators. Together, we made sure they understood that school workers are an important part of the education team. Now, let’s continue to stand strong to ensure that Governor Brown signs this bill.
