We Did It! Local 99 Members Make a Difference in 2012 Election

SEIU Local 99 members led a major push to win Proposition 30 and beat back $6 billion in budget cuts that would have devastated our schools, jobs and programs. We also beat back Proposition 32 that would have silenced our voice to keep fighting for quality education and good jobs. And we re-elected Barack Obama, a President that will continue to stand with us on the issues we care about.

It was one of our hardest battles because we were pitted against billionaires and corporations that poured millions of dollars into t.v. ads and other efforts to stop us. But we fought back with something more valuable than their money – people power!

SEIU Local 99 members hit the ground running and talked to more than 10,000 voters through face-to-face neighborhood precinct walks and phone banks. Thousands of us signed petitions pledging to Vote Yes on 30 and No on 32, and we urged friends and family members to join us. Many members travelled to battleground states to win for President Obama. And hundreds of us rallied with Governor Brown to save our schools.

We used our feet, hands, voices, and most importantly our heart to reach voters. And we proved that when we fight, work hard and speak with one voice, we win!

Thank you, SEIU Local 99 members. We still have many challenges ahead of us but I know that our unity and fighting spirit will continue to move us forward.

In Solidarity,

Courtni Pugh

SEIU Local 99 Executive Director
