“We’re ready to picket!” say LAUSD Transportation employees

SEIU Local 99 members who warehouse and transport school supplies, food products, furniture and other District materials have urged the Los Angeles Unified School District to honor our job experience, loyalty and seniority when allocating “Z Time” assignments.

Louis-Gallegos
We will picket so that no one will have to go through what I did when I lost my grandmother during Z Time. It felt like a slap in the face when I was denied bereavement leave—after 14 years with the District! We had to make some noise to get their attention, but with this agreement the District has shown us the respect we deserve. —Louis Gallegos, Stock Worker

Also, we will never agree to the District’s proposal to give up our rights to regular job benefits during “Z Time”—such as illness (including kin care), personal necessity and bereavement leave.

We have submitted a fair proposal that includes provisions allowing the District the right to change posted “Z Time” assignments prior to the selection process based on the operational needs of the department. Our proposal also acknowledges that the District must have flexibility in adjusting workdays and hours.

Despite our repeated and reasonable proposal to the District, they have again rejected our request.

It has become clear that they will not listen unless we get louder.

The District has announced that they will open up the bidding process for these second-rate jobs on June 30th. This year, we will picket in front of the Pico Rivera Warehouse the day before this scheduled bidding process to tell the District…

No second-rate jobs!
