Landmark $15/hour minimum wage went into effect July 1 at LAUSD

Barbara TorresOn July 1, 2016, we marked an historic day for SEIU Local 99 and members working at LAUSD. The final set of wage increases we negotiated in our last contract went into effect.   The minimum wage at  LAUSD officially went up to $15 per hour. Additionally, members already earning above the $15/hour received a 2.5% raise.

We can all be proud that our Union spearheaded this first significant gain of the National Fight For $15 Movement. Members at LAUSD will see the $15 per hour minimum four years before Los Angeles City and County workers see this raise, and six years before it goes into effect in California. Read our press statement here.

We’re not stopping here!

We can also be proud that we’ve made a giant leap in lifting the wage floor at LAUSD. We’re now in a position to organize, take action and demand that LAUSD raise the wage ceiling. And it won’t be too long before we head back to the bargaining table for our next contract. Our current contract expires 12 months from today.

In the coming months, look for more news and information about how we’ll be gearing up for our next contract negotiations. It’s going to take all of us  getting involved if we want to keep pushing forward.

One thing you can do today is make sure you are registered to vote. An important proposition, Proposition 55,  will be on the ballot on November 8 which will extend the tax on the rich to fund our schools and jobs. If this proposition does not win, the District stands to lose millions of state education dollars. So make sure you’re registered and ready to vote. Click here.

We mark an important victory today, but we still have much more to do. Let’s continue to stand strong and united.

In Unity,

Barbara Torres

SEIU Local 99 President

LAUSD Special Education Assistant
