Welcome Back To School!

Dear SEIU Local 99 Member,

As the new school year begins, we want to recognize your commitment to students.  Through your hard work, you truly touch the future every day and make a difference in the lives of so many young people. Have a great year.

At SEIU Local 99, we’re also looking forward to a new school year where we can continue to move forward on the issues that directly impact members’ lives and livelihoods.  We’re already off to a good start with some gains that take effect this year that we won only through the strength of our Union, including:

•             Wage increases that took effect July 1

•             Plans to kick-off a new Special Education Career Ladder Program

•             Expansion of the Supper Program which means increased jobs and hours

•             District support for A-G Graduation Requirements, including increased summer school

•             Continued funding for our OASIS program which supports jobs for Local 99 members and brings services to families on campus

We’re also excited to be kicking-off a new campaign to help thousands of SEIU 99 members, including TAs, Out of School Program Workers and Community Representatives gain health care coverage under LAUSD’s plan. We’re sending a strong message to the District that they cannot continue to divide us with a two-tier system of benefits. Everyone works hard and is committed to student success and everyone should have access to the same benefits.

This year we also plan to strengthen our Labor Management Committees so that we’re really pushing the District to address the issues that impact our work lives. We’re also re-focusing our Steward Councils so that management understands member leaders at our worksites are the first line of defense against any violations of our contract.

One important thing you can do now to make sure we continue to improve our jobs is make sure you are a full SEIU Local 99 Member. If your paycheck lists you as an “Agency Fee Payer” that means you’re not a full member. Our numbers are our strength when we go to the District to fight for anything, so make sure you are a full and active member. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP.

Once again, have a great school year. And remember that our contract includes many job protections. But it’s only as strong as we make it.  If you have any questions about your job or believe our contract is being violated, contact your Steward or call Local 99’s Member Resource Center at 213-637-0296.

Let’s continue to stand together – for our jobs, our students and our communities.

In Solidarity,

Barbara Torres                                 Max Arias
