Extended School Year (Summer School) Job Applications are due March 20 by 5:00 pm. Click here to apply.
If we want to increase summer job opportunities, we need to continue to push for increased ESY student enrollment. Increased enrollment means more programs for students and increased job opportunities for Local 99 members. Even though the District’s March 16 student enrollment deadline has passed, parents can enroll their children as late as the first day of ESY. Of course, it is always best to enroll early to ensure that students’ programming and staffing needs are met on the first day of school.
SEIU Local 99 is communicating with the Regional Centers to ensure that student enrollment information is distributed to parents. Here are other ways you can help increase ESY enrollment and job assignments:
HOW WE CAN HELP INCREASE STUDENT ENROLLMENT:
Remind Parents (with permission from teacher).
We know working parents are busy. Get permission from your teacher to remind them to enroll their children as soon as possible. Even though the District’s March 16 enrollment deadline has passed, parents can enroll their children in ESY up until the first day of school. Parents can request an application form from their teacher or in the school office. Click Here for a copy of LAUSD’s ESY Parent Guide.
REMEMBER: Local 99 members cannot have direct conversations with parents or guardians about a child’s behavior or outcomes, but with the teacher’s permission, you can let parents know that the ESY program is available and remind them to apply.
Talk to your Special Ed Teacher
Many Special Ed Teachers have little or no support in the classroom during the summer session. Urge Special Ed Teachers to request more assistance during ESY.
Talk to your Parent Center.
Community Representatives staffing the Parent Centers are SEIU Local 99 members and they’re happy to get the word out to parents and guardians about ESY summer school enrollment.
HOW WE CAN INCREASE JOBS AND PROTECT OUR RIGHTS:
Apply for an ESY position.
The more Local 99 members who apply for ESY, the stronger message we send to the District that they need to expand ESY and invest in experienced and dedicated LAUSD employees. Staff applications are due by Friday, March 20, 2015 at 5:00 pm. Click here to apply.
Make sure Welligent Classroom Management is up-to-date.
Ask your administrator to make sure that Welligent (formerly known as the matrix) is up-to-date.
Ask for a copy of the Class Staffing List. Let your administrator know it is available in the Classroom Management Module on Welligent. See LAUSD’s Reference Guide 6325.0 Section IV. C for more information. Click Here for a copy of the Reference Guide.
According to our contract, if you are assigned to a student during the regular school year who is attending ESY, you must be offered the ESY assignment with that student if you apply to work the summer session. Make sure Welligent reflects your student assignment.
Know your rights in the ESY job application and assignment process.
