“I learned more in those four hours than I ever had before,” says Covina Child Care Provider.
On August 15, 2015, SEIU Local 99 Child Care Provider leaders hosted member providers from all over Southern California for an informative workshop. We learned more about how to address developmental delays in the children we care for and how to help parents access the resources they need.
Here’s what providers had to say about the event:

“In my 33 years as a provider, I have attended many seminars, workshops and classes on working with Special Needs children—but after my union’s Special Needs panel discussion and workshop, I learned more in those four hours than I ever had before. I received so much information that I needed and now I feel really informed!”

“It was informative and enlightening. We learned so much critical information about special needs children, the American Disabilities Act, the Regional Centers, Special Needs Network, Public Counsel, organizations, resources, and more. Brian Capra from Public Counsel ended our event with a concise breakdown about the services available at the seven various Regional Centers in our communities. It really was a GREAT EVENT!”

“I have a 24-year-old son with special needs. So in some ways, I’m already sort of an expert. But I really learned so much from this event in just a few hours. It’s pretty much public knowledge that if you live in a nice neighborhood and speak the ‘right’ language, you get a different level of services for special needs kids. But at Saturday’s event, we each received a complete list of resources and programs. I shared it with one of my parents, and she’s already found a really great program that she wants to get her autistic daughter into.”

“I don’t currently have any children in my care with special needs, but I feel more prepared now. It was great to hear the stories of other providers in the room and learn from all their experience. In fact, I really want to practice what I’ve learned. I look forward to being able to help a child with special needs develop and learn. I will treat them like my own son, my own daughter.”
