October 7, 2015 Update:
Our Special Education Attendance Policy Bargaining Team met with LAUSD on October 7 to continue negotiations over the new attendance policy that the District introduced at the start of the school year. This policy specifically targets Special Education Paraprofessionals. The good news is that the District agreed to many of our demands — but there’s still more to do. Negotiations are not over and we need to continue to stand strong. We’ve come this far because the District knows we are united – let’s keep moving forward!

September 2, 2015 Update:
Members of our Special Ed Labor Management Committee and Negotiations Team met today with LAUSD to discuss their new attendance policy targeting Special Ed Paraprofessionals. Our SEIU Local 99 Team presented the District with all of the concerns that were raised by members at our meetings last week. The District insisted that this is not a new policy. But when we asked them for specific answers and examples, they had none.
We pressed them on the District’s new policy of allowing schools to “customize” the policy to suit their needs. We also asked for answers on how they expect employees to sign-in and be at their assigned work area at the same time. We expressed our concerns over the disciplinary measures in their new policy. And overall our Team shared how disrespected Special Ed Paraprofessionals feel with the District’s implementation of their attendance policy without any discussions with us. We told them how it was basically their “welcome back to school letter” to us — and it’s not appreciated.
The District said they will come back with answers at our next meeting. We expect to meet with them again in the next two weeks.
While we are in negotiations, if you are asked to sign the new policy at your worksite, be sure you are only signing an “acknowledgement” that you have received the attendance policy. An acknowledgement of receipt does not mean you are accepting the policy, simply that you have received the information. When you sign, you can also include a comment that states you are not agreeing to the policy. You can find a copy of the District’ new attendance policy on their website. Click here.
