We’re growing stronger!

In June 2015, provider leaders—assisted by extra help from SEIU Local 99 and our International Union—dedicated several days to meeting new Southland providers and inviting them to join our efforts to build a movement for quality child care and a voice in our industry.

We were all over Southern California—from Colton to Lancaster to Gardena—having meaningful conversations with other providers about what we’ve accomplished and what more needs fixing.

Long Beach provider Marta Delgado signs up Lancaster provider Maria Menendez to be one of our newest members. Welcome, Maria!

“I traveled all the way from Long Beach to Lancaster today,” said Long Beach Provider and SEIU Local 99 Executive Board Member Marta Delgado. “I came to talk to other providers and let them know about the movement we’re building. I want them to know how strong we are and how strong we want to become!”

Earlier this year in April and May, child care providers—joined by other SEIU Local 99 members and Fast Food workers who rely on our child care services—kicked off this outreach effort with house meetings and visits to providers in our communities.

These efforts have resulted in scores of new providers joining our call child care movement. We also collected signatures in support of Senate Bill 548, the Raising Child Care Quality and Accessibility Act.

FastFoodworker-cc-org-blitz “I believe we all need to support each other, we’re all in the same fight. We’re all trying to better our working conditions,” said Edgar Gonzalez, a fast food worker at McDonald’s in the South Los Angeles, on why he joined South Gate child care provider Maria Ponce in our conversations with other providers.
