Gov. Brown Continues to Fund K-12 Education: More $ means increased stability for jobs, wages and student services

Our Union Strength at Work!

Union members’ work to help pass Proposition 30 in 2012, continues to pay-off. On January 9, 2015 Governor Jerry Brown presented his proposal for California’s 2015-16 budget and it includes more money for our schools. The total proposed budget for K-12 schools equals $65.7 billion. And this means great news for our jobs, wages and student services.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has said the Governor’s proposed budget will reduce the District’s budget deficit – and save thousands of jobs and services to students. LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines has said he is “certain that we can and we will provide the necessary educational support every student deserves.” Local 99 members are holding him to it.

There’s also good news for SEIU Local 99 members who want to become teachers. The Governor’s budget recognizes there is a great need to recruit and train more new teachers in California and increases funding for the state’s teacher credentialing commission by $10 million over the next two years.

Make no mistake. It’s thanks to our union strength that this budget ensures our jobs are stable and our wage increases are protected.

As we move forward in the budget process, let’s continue to advocate for education funding in Sacramento and push for increased funding for jobs and student services.
