Local 99 Members Have A Night to Remember!

This past December, SEIU Local 99’s Member Services Committee hosted a celebration recognizing those of among our brothers and sisters who stepped up as leaders and helped build a stronger union in 2014. The event theme was “A Night to Remember” and indeed it was!

The event recognized:

  • Executive Board and Officers
  • Committee Members
  • Member Political Organizers
  • Stewards
  • Labor Management Committee Members
  • Bargaining Team Members
  • Strategic Planning Committee Members
  • and members helping to build union strength through their outreach efforts

The event also served as a time to reflect on our achievements of 2014, including:

  • Our hard work to win a historic $15 minimum wage increase at LAUSD
  • Expanding health care benefits to more members, creating new opportunities for job training and career advancement, and opening up discussions with the District to increase hours and full time jobs, and improve safety and materials on the job.
  • Wage increases at Compton and Lynwood USD, The Accelerated School, MAOF, Options, and LACOE
  • Taking our statewide campaign for the Quality Child Care Act to a new level through a 3-day statewide tour that received great media attention
  • Re-electing Tom Torlakson for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a champion for all education workers
  • Successfully pushing President Obama to take executive action to stop the deportation crisis that has been tearing families apart and forcing millions of immigrants to work in fear
  • Forming a partnership with United Teachers Los Angeles and LAUSD to ensure schools are safe havens for immigrant families. We’ll achieve this by providing families with information and services to help them with the immigration process under President Obama’s recently announced “Administrative Relief” action.

Finally, we looked forward to the year ahead in 2015 as we:

  • Fight for a great contract at LACCD, Montague Charter School, and Ventura Community College District
  • Fight for passage of the Quality Child Care Act
  • Continue bargaining with LAUSD to protect and improve health care benefits
  • Continue fighting for summer unemployment insurance for school workers
  • Continue helping our community by bringing immigration and other services directly into LAUSD Schools
  • Fight the billionaires and big corporations that continue to attack working people. We’re going to keep building our union to make sure we protect gains like sick leave, seniority, a minimum wage and overtime pay

Happy New Year to the entire SEIU Local 99 Family.
