2013 SPECIAL UNION ELECTION FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a special election?
A special election is called by the SEIU Local 99 Executive Board to fill vacancies on the board. Vacancies are those seats that were filled during the last regularly occurring union election, but are now unfilled.

How many vacancies are there?
There are two (2) vacancies in the Early Education Division, one (1) vacancy in the Higher Education Division and one (1) vacancy in the Retiree Division.

Who can run for office?
Any member in good standing who is part of the Early Education, Higher Education and Retirees divisions can run.

How do I know what division I belong to?
The Early Education Division includes members employed by the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) and Options.

The Higher Education Division includes members employed by the Los Angeles Community College District and the Ventura Community College District. However, for purposes of this election, only members employed by the Los Angeles Community College District would qualify to serve since the board already includes two member representatives from the Ventura Community College District.

The Retiree Division includes members who are retired from employment

What’s the process to run for office?
Before you can run for office you must be a member in good standing and you must be nominated by members in your division who are also in good standing.

If you are seeking nomination as a member of the Early Education or the Higher Education Divisions, you must collect 25 signatures from members in your division who are in good standing.

If you are a member of the Retiree Division, you must collect 10 signatures from retirees in good standing.

Signatures must be collected on an official Local 99 petition form which can be picked up at the main SEIU Local 99 office located at 2724 W. 8th St. Los Angeles, CA 90005. Petitions will be available July 2nd through August 1st   between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm.

Petitions must be returned to the SEIU main office located at 2724 W. 8th St. Los Angeles, CA 90005 no later than 5pm on August 1st. The Elections Committee will then review the petitions and determine which individuals qualify to be placed on the election ballot.

Where and when can I get a petition to file to be a candidate?
Nominating petitions will be available from July 2nd through August 1st between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm at the main SEIU Local 99 office located at 2724 W. 8th St. Los Angeles, CA 90005. Please note that petitions must be turned in by 5pm on August 1st.

Extended hours for nominations petition pick-up will take place on July 9th from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Who can vote in this special election?
Since this election only covers the Early Education, Higher Education and Retiree Divisions, only members who are part of these divisions and are in good standing can vote.

What makes someone a member in good standing?
A member in good standing is someone who has filled out a union application, paid the required dues obligation and must not be in arrears in the payment of any installment of dues or assessments more than one hundred and twenty (120) days after their due date.

How long is the term of office?
Members would take office in the fall of 2013 and would conclude their term on June 30, 2015

Who can sign my petition?

What happens if I lost my ballot or I never received one?

If you lose your ballot or never received one you should contact Mary Gutierrez at 213.387.8393 Ext 308. If she is unavailable you can contact Nancy Calderon at 213.387.8393 Ext 133.

Where do I go vote?
All voting is done by mail. If you are a member in good standing and part of the Early Education, Higher Education and Retirees Division you will receive a ballot at your most current mailing address on file.
