Torrance Unified School District Bargaining Update #1
MAY 3, 2013
NEGOTIATIONS WITH MANAGEMENT SET FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY
We’re starting to negotiate improvements on May 7, 2013!
The Bargaining Team we elected from among our co-workers will meet with TUSD Administration next week to begin negotiations on our new union contract.
What is contract bargaining and why is it important?
Contract bargaining (also known as “collective bargaining”) is the process where our union negotiates a contract with the District to determine our pay, benefits, work hours, leaves, safety, and other working conditions.
Basically, it’s our opportunity to use the strength of our numbers to have a say at work about what we care about…and to have it guaranteed in writing!
How am I involved?
SEIU Local 99 members are involved in every step leading up to our contract ratification. We identify what improvements we want to see in our contract, usually through a member survey. This year we did it a bit differently: in addition to collecting written surveys, we met face-to-face at every worksite to discuss together what we want to improve and to set our bargaining priorities.
We then elected our co-workers to our SEIU Local 99 Bargaining Team. These co-workers, supported by legal and contract experts from our union, will meet with District representatives to negotiate our next contract.
What happens next?
We submitted our initial bargaining proposals to the District earlier in April. We’re scheduled for bargaining with the District on May 7 and will be scheduling additional dates at that time.
Our Bargaining Team will write and distribute emails, flyers, and web articles to keep us all informed on the progress of negotiations. We will know everything as it happens and be a part of the decisions. Our Bargaining Team is looking for feedback!
When we get a tentative agreement on an entire new contract, it will be submitted to the entire membership for a ratification vote. Our new contract is not finalized until approved by a vote of the entire membership.
What can I do?
The most important thing we can do is to stay informed. Be sure to sign up to get emailed Bargaining Updates. We can also publicly support our Bargaining Team by doing things like wearing our purple Local 99 T-shirts when we’re bargaining. We may need to show up together at School Board meetings to make sure they know we’re serious.
