On Feb. 7th, let’s tell Congress: Don’t cut education!

On February 7th, thousands of Americans will pick up the phone to call their Members of Congress and tell them to stop the automatic cuts to education that kick in on March 1st.

We need to make the call, too!

Here’s the background:

When Congress stopped the “fiscal cliff” tax increases on January 1, 2013, it delayed for two months the automatic budget cuts for all federally funded programs. These cuts, if and when they occur, will affect programs in which SEIU Local 99 members work, such as Head Start, Special Education, and Child Care.

But what about Proposition 30?

Prop. 30, a California state initiative we fought for last November, reversed years of education budget cuts to areas that state government is responsible for funding. It stopped additional budget cuts this year. But while Sacramento is on the right track to restore funding for education, some Members of Congress in Washington, D.C., still want to make cuts to the portion of programs they are responsible for funding! If enacted, these nationwide cuts will reduce services, leave thousands of California children without child care, and lead to some layoffs at our local public schools.

It’s easy to make the call. You don’t have to be an expert!

Just say…

Hi, my name is _____ and I’m _[say your job]_ in _[name your city]_. I’m calling to ask you to vote against cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and essential services like our schools and child care. Cuts don’t create jobs, these vital programs do! I’m asking you to create jobs, close tax loopholes for the rich and big corporations, and invest in education so that our children have a future and we have an educated workforce.

C’mon SEIU Local 99, let’s make our voices heard in Wash., D.C.!

On Thursday, Feb. 7, join thousands of other SEIU members and call 1-866-426-2631

…to be connected to the offices of your Senators and Member of Congress.
Tell them to say NO to cutting our children’s future.
