We told Governor Brown: “Don’t make us work until we die!”

MAJOR VICTORY: GOV. SIGNS RETIREMENT LEGISLATION!

On September 28th, 2012, Governor Brown signed SB1234, the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program.

SEIU Local 99 Child Care Providers played a HUGE role in making this happen. We visited legislators in their district offices, called them when we weren’t visiting, and even went up to Sacramento to make sure they understood what it’s like for us. And the Governor heard us. He took a bold step in the fight against poverty by signing a bill that creates a path for private sector workers like us to enroll in the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program, a voluntary retirement plan with guaranteed benefits. SB1234, co-authored by Sens. Kevin de León and Darrell Steinberg, establishes California as a leader among states in creating new retirement plans for private-sector workers. Without Secure Choice, nearly 50% of middle-income California workers will retire at or near poverty.

We won this because we fought for it

Hundreds of us got involved! We wrote letters, signed petitions, made phone calls, visited legislators’ district offices, and joined providers from across the state to talk to Sacramento!
