When We Fight, We Win! Furlough Days at LAUSD Rescinded

SEIU Local 99 members and staff beat back billionaires and corporations and passed Proposition 30 – bringing more money into our schools.  The additional funds means SEIU Local 99 members no longer have to take the ten furlough days this school year.

How did we do it?

Make no mistake, our political action helped us secure this big victory for our schools, jobs and communities. That’s why it was so important to keep our political voice strong by defeating Proposition 32.

  • SEIU Local 99 members and staff talked to more than 10,000 voters through face-to-face neighborhood precinct walks and phone banks.
  • Thousands of us signed petitions pledging to Vote Yes on 30 and No on 32.
  • We urged friends and family members to join us.
  • Hundreds of us rallied with Governor Brown to save our schools and jobs.
  • We helped elect school board members who truly value classified employees in our schools.

How will it work?

  • Members will still take the November furlough day but on November 13 the school board will vote to extend the school year and, if approved, the lost instructional days will be restored later this year.
  • Members will take no additional furlough days after December 1, 2012.
  • It is anticipated that all the furlough days will be restored by the end of the 2012-13 school year.

We made politics work for working people! Let’s stay strong, stay active!
