Gov. Jerry Browns Joins SEIU Local 99 Members To Get Out the Vote for Yes on 30

Governor Jerry Brown with students and education workers speaks to Local 99 members

California Governor Jerry Brown, State Controller John Chiang, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia, LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy, Senator Kevin De Leon and other elected and community leaders rallied with hundreds of SEIU Local 99 members on November 3 to help Get-Out-the-Vote for Proposition 30.

“I feel the power…,” said Governor Jerry Brown to a crowd of SEIU Local 99 members who had just completed several hours of neighborhood precinct walks talking to voters. “This is a collection, a coming together of individual people – school workers – to counteract the millions and millions of dollars from the billionaires and others who evidently don’t care as much as you do about the schools of California.”

The rally was the start of the final push for Yes on Proposition 30 to make sure we stop $6 billion in cuts to our schools and programs. Proposition 30  will  finally bring badly needed funds to education. But if Proposition 30 does not pass, we will see additional cuts – including more furlough days, layoffs, reduced hours, and cuts to student services and child care programs our communities need.

LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy

“Nothing happens in LAUSD without SEIU (members),” said LAUSD Superintendent Deasy. “Not a single kid comes to school, classrooms are not clean, children are not fed without SEIU Local 99 members.” But with budget cuts, Superintendent Deasy said that there are not enough SEIU workers in our schools and students feel the impact.

“I really try to keep the school clean so that the kids can learn in a safe environment,” said South Gate Middle School night custodian and Local 99 member Theresa Aguilar. “A few years ago, there were eight custodians at our school. Now, because of all the budget cuts, there are only two. We can’t keep cutting back on basic services like clean schools. We can’t keep cutting back on our kids’ education. Think about your future. Vote yes on Proposition 30!”
