Update on Furlough Days at LAUSD

How many furlough days must I take per month?

SEIU Local 99 members in Units B & C should only take one furlough day per month. Members on the traditional (single track) school year calendar have three pre-assigned furlough days: Nov. 21, March 25, and June 3. Your Site Administrator will make the final decision on the rest of your furlough days for this school year. However, the furloughs must be assigned one per month, to be taken on any school day — Monday through Friday. Your Site Administrator may give you the option of choosing your furlough days. The main concern for furlough day assignments is ensuring that the unpaid days are least disruptive to students.

This is the furlough day schedule for members on the single track calendar:

October: 1 day

November: November 21, 2012

December: 1 day

January: 1 day

February: 1 day

March: March 25, 2013

April: 1 day

May: 1 day

June: June 3, 2013

What will happen during Thanksgiving Week when students are not in school?

On Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20, the District is required to provide SEIU Local 99 members with training or a job assignment. These are regular paid days for SEIU Local 99 members. The District is responsible for setting up the trainings or work assignment. If your training or job assignment is not at your regular school site, the District must direct you to the assigned location. For the rest of Thanksgiving week: Wednesday, November 21 is a furlough day and Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 are paid holidays.

Should I take vacation during Thanksgiving week?

SEIU Local 99 does not recommend that you take vacation days on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 19 and 20. Site Administrators cannot force you to take vacation time. Save your vacation days to enjoy when you choose to take the time off , and not when it is more convenient for the District.

What about unassigned days? Can these be used as furlough days?

No. Unassigned days cannot be used as furlough days because the unassigned days do not fall under the 204 days of eligible pay that most members are entitled to under our contract. Additionally, when you are on a furlough day you still accrue vacation time. You do not earn vacation during unassigned days.

Will we have to take more furlough days this school year?

Our furlough agreement calls for 10 furlough days in the 2012- 13 school year for members in Units B & C. However, it also states that if Proposition 30, the Governor’s revenue initiative, is not approved by voters on November 6, we will re-open discussions with the District over additional furlough days this school year. If Proposition 30 passes, education will receive up to $6 billion in extra funds. We must get involved and reach out to voters to secure funds for schools and jobs. Sign-up to phone bank or precinct walk.
