Student services will be protected and thousands of jobs will be saved
SEIU Local 99 members in LAUSD Units B & C voted to approve ten furlough days in the 2012-13 school year. This will stop thousands of layoffs and protect many student programs and services.
We thank all of the Local 99 members who participated in this process. This vote demonstrates the selfless commitment of SEIU Local 99 members to stand united for each other and for the students we serve every day. The ten furloughs, along with other job and hour restorations, will save over 6000 jobs and restore early education, transportation, maintenance, nutrition and other vital programs and student services.
The agreement calls for ten furlough days to be scheduled by the District. The District will make every effort to ensure that the furlough days are taken one per month starting in July 2012 and concluding by the end of June 2013.

But there is still work to do to stop additional cuts next school year!
The ten furlough days will help address the District’s current deficit. However, if Governor Brown’s tax revenue initiative, The Schools & Safety Protection Act, is not approved by voters in November, the state education budget will be cut by another $5 billion and LAUSD will be forced to make more cuts. We can stop additional cuts by making sure the Governor’s revenue initiative passes in November.
Here’s What You Can Do:
Help Pass the Governor’s Revenue Initiative: The Schools & Safety Protection Act
Talk to your co-workers, family, and friends. Let them know that we’ve got to vote for more revenue to save our schools and protect good jobs. Governor Jerry Brown’s initiative will raise income taxes for the richest Californians and temporarily increase the sales tax by ¼ of a cent. If voters approve this initiative on November 6, 2012, schools will see up to $9 billion in new funds.
Fight for a Fair Economy: March On Walmart
We’re in this budget mess because profitable corporations like Walmart don’t pay their fair share of taxes – that’s money that can go to our schools! Join the rally and march on Walmart on Saturday, June 30 at 10am. The march starts at the L.A. State Historic Park 1245 N. Spring St. Los Angeles, CA 90012 and moves to Chinatown, where Walmart is planning to build their next store.
