Update on LAUSD Special Education Budget Cuts: April 26, 2012

On April 26, 2012, SEIU Local 99 met with the District to continue discussions over potential layoffs in Special Education. Both Local 99 and the District are in agreement that we must protect jobs for the benefit of our students and families. The District has proposed to avoid layoffs by reducing all Special Education positions to six hours OR the following:
– Employees working 6.95 hours or less would be reduced to 6 hours.
– Employees working 7.95 hours or less would be reduced to 7 hours.
– Employees working 8 hours would be reduced to 7 hours.
– Employees currently working 6 or 7 hours will not be reduced.

Keep in mind that, per our contract, the District may reduce hours without further discussions with our union. Click here for the contract language regarding work hours. However, the District and Local 99 are committed to continuing our discussions to find solutions to the budget crisis that will save jobs and services.

Any reductions would take effect July 1, 2012 but NO final decision has been made regarding any potential layoffs or reduction in hours. Please continue to check this website for the latest updates.
