Help is on the way!
ATTENTION LACOE SEIU MEMBERS!
We are elated to announce the launch of a Catastrophic Leave Committee for SEIU Local 99 Members.
When faced with critical illness, resources may be limited. Our last contract negotiation added one more alternative that may be a help to unit members dealing with a loss of pay due to personal illness or caretaking responsibilities for immediate family members. The Catastrophic Leave program allows SEIU members to donate excess accrued vacation or sick time to a pool from which affected union members can request additional paid absence time.
To qualify, members must have exhausted all paid leave, including reduced-rate and any other pay, such as workers compensation. Also, the loss of income must cause a financial hardship. The program is geared toward sudden, unexpected circumstances. It is not a good option for chronic and long-term illnesses.
Donations to the time pool are strictly voluntary, but per LACOE policy, the donating employee must retain at least ten days of paid absence time for their personal use.
All requests are subject to review by a committee of SEIU members, and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis, subject to the amount of donated time available in the pool.
