ABOUT THE CANDIDATES
Gino Kwok
As past President and current School Board Member of Hacienda La Puente Unified, Gino Kwok’s proudest accomplishment was uniting the community to support ALL CHILDREN. This allowed him to achieve these goals for the First Time in HLPUSD’s 45-year history when he was Board President:
- $40,000,000 of School Improvements Without Tax Increase
- New Facilities at ALL High Schools (Including NEW FOOTBALL FIELDS/TRACKS at Wilson, Los Altos, Workman; NEW POOL at La Puente HS)
- Opened Hacienda Heights Community Center
- Opened Orange Grove Park
- Opened Puente Creek Nature Education Center
- La Puente High School’s 100th Anniversary Celebration
- AA Degree Program (College Transferable)
- Free Breakfast for Every Student
During his term, student test scores increased; new science labs were created; new math courses were introduced to schools; Spanish and Chinese language programs expanded; the District maintained balanced budgets and held healthy cash reserves; there were no teacher layoffs; graduation rates increased; more students were college-bound; technical training was enhanced; and there was greater parent involvement in our schools.
Gino Kwok is a proud HLPUSD graduate and speaks Spanish and Chinese. He attended USC Law School, is a Law Professor, attorney, and parent.
Martin Medrano
Martin Medrano supports the expansion of early education and after school programs. He also supports benefits for part-time employees and increasing full time positions whenever possible. Medrano a B.A. in political science from UC Berkeley, to which he successfully transferred from Mt. San Antonio College.
Medrano is currently a Field Deputy in the California Legislature, where he works every day to help area schools communicate their needs and priorities to the State Legislature. In addition, he is a Director of College Bridge, an area nonprofit organization that assists students and counselors to navigate the college admissions process and prepare for higher education.
