In February, SEIU Local 99 members helped bring some Valentine’s Day love to some of the children being treated at Shriner’s Hospital. This neighborhood hospital, which assists children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate—regardless of the patients’ ability to pay—has been supporting Los Angeles children since 1952.
Local 99 members helped throw a Valentine party for the children who are currently Shriner’s patients, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and our Social, Economic and Global Justice Committee (SEGJ). We brought backpacks, sun visors and teddy bears. SEGJ committee member Darrio Connor, a Health Care Assistant at Holmes Middle School, wore his clown costume and entertained the children with games. SEGJ members created Valentines Cards with the patients, which the children later gave to their family and friends.
To be a part of events like these that foster positive community relations and build long-term alliances with local justice organizations, be a part of our SEGJ Committee. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Be sure to check our Local 99 events calendar for exact times and locations.
