Governor Brown signs law that gives classified school employees the same Parental Leave benefits as teachers

Last year, Gov. Brown signed AB 375 into law, increasing maternity leave for teachers to up to 12 weeks of differential pay (the difference between the teacher’s salary and the cost of their substitute). AB 375 also applied to fathers and adoptive parents, including same-sex couples.

This was a great step…except for one thing:

It left out others who make our schools and community colleges great, such as school bus drivers, cafeteria staff, building & grounds workers and teaching assistants.

On September 30, 2016, the governor corrected this injustice when he signed AB 2393. Currently, classified employees can get up to 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave. And new mothers, who give birth, can get state disability pay. But with AB 2393, classified employees will also be eligible to receive differential pay, which can provide an extra cushion for parents.

“I am happy Governor Brown agrees that school employees should not have to choose between bonding with their newborns and having enough money to pay their bills,” said the bill’s author, Assemblymember Nora Campos. “AB 2393 will ensure a balance between family and work for all employees.”

This bill goes into effect January 1, 2017.
